Known as “The Mystic Seer of the Future”, Morty De Ath serves as one of the gym leaders in the British Isles League, based in London and specialising in Ghost-types.

Morty De Ath (b. October 31, 1984) is a Pokémon trainer, gym leader, seer and academic from the United Kingdom. He is a specialist in Ghost-type Pokémon. Morty has been the London Gym Leader since 2010, taking over from the incumbent who had been a Psychic-type trainer. His gym, a spiral tower, was specially built on the edge of Highgate Cemetery.

Morty was born to Arthur De Ath, a civil engineer, and Mary Hampshire, a nurse, in Wiltshire. From a young age, he was fascinated by Stonehenge and would beg to be taken there often. He became friendly with many of the wild Ghost Pokémon that lived around it, and this would cause him to begin his Pokémon journey. After a particularly friendly Gastly followed him home when he was eleven, he adopted it as his own and it became his first Pokémon.

At sixteen, Morty began travelling the world to train up his Pokémon and catch more and learn about all types, but in particular Ghost-types. He is rumoured to be the only person to ever enter a cave filled with Spiritomb and come out alive and unscathed. At twenty, he settled down in London and began working as a tour guide around the city, learning the ins and outs of it, and in particular enjoying the many ghost stories that the city had acquired over its long history.

At twenty-one, Morty began work on his thesis and it was published eighteen months later in 2006 to critical acclaim. (This thesis, entitled “A Haunter Ate My Dreams: A Study into the Diet of Ghost Pokémon” is still highly recommended as reading for anyone with a deep interest in Ghost Pokémon due to its comprehensive nature.) He remains unmarried and indeed very little is known about his private life, as he likes to keep a low profile, despite his world famous status as a Gym Leader.

He became the Gym Leader in London in 2010, supplanting the previous Leader who wanted to retire to spend more time with his remaining dreams. Although previously a Psychic specialist gym, Morty naturally insisted on it becoming a Ghost specialist. This has led to certain rivalries with Fantina Proulx, the Ghost specialist Gym Leader of Paris (since 1999) who has claimed repeatedly that Morty merely seeks to steal her thunder. Morty claims otherwise.

He is said to be peaceful, personable and enjoys long walks at night in graveyards, claiming them to be deeply interesting places with more stories in each than any writer could ever hope to produce in a lifetime.
